Sample Horse Vaccination Programs
Planning A Horse Vaccination Program It's important to partner up with your veterinarian to discuss which vaccinations are best for your horse and your area. Remember to share this important information: 4. Is your horse a pleasure or performance horse? 5. Does your horse travel? Where will he/she be traveling? 6. What other animals does your horse have contact with?
Once your veterinarian takes in all these factors, he/she can set up a program for the core vaccines - tetanus, West Nile virus (WNV), Eastern and Western encephalomyelitis (EEE and WEE) and rabies - as well as risk-based vaccines - influenza, herpesvirus, potomac horse fever and more.
Horse Vaccination Timeline
March/April/May Administer core vaccines before warm weather and mosquito season kick in. This may also be a good time for influenza and herpesvirus vaccines.
June/July/August Protect your horse from pest-related diseases, especially mosquitoes. Check with your veterinarian to determine what your horse needs.
September/October/November Now is the time to immunize your horse for respiratory viruses like influenza and rhinopneumonitis.
December/January/February If your horse will be traveling to areas where high-risk diseases are present, make sure your horse receives appropriate vaccination.
